In the temple, the first followers of Jesus took part in the public prayers and readings (Acts 2:46-47). At that time, there were no Bibles for individuals. So reading the Holy Scriptures together was an important part. Even today, reading the Bible together opens up new perspectives.
They celebrated together in their homes. These were probably meals to which they invited each other and renewed their faith with prayers, breaking bread and drinking wine, as at the Jewish Shabbat meal. Perhaps some thoughts on the daily Torah reading were also passed on. During the meal, people discussed God and the world. Everything culminated in praising God by praying psalms together and thanking God.
“Church” are those called out by God (Ekklesia / ancient Greek ἐκκλησία), who support, build up and encourage one another. The meetings are characterised by the presence of God (prayers / reverence), the Holy Scriptures and mutual appreciation and compassion.
Acts 2:46-47: And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
47 praising God and in favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
