Three to five thousand people attended the festival. The festival was moved to the site north of Re’im on the road to Be’eri two days before it was due to begin, after the original site in southern Israel became unavailable, and the new site was only announced to participants a few hours before the festival was due to begin.
Hamas blocked the road from the north, west and south. Participants could only escape eastwards across open fields. Many were simply shot. At least 260 festival-goers died. Many were wounded and taken hostage.
