Massacre in the Congo

Bishop Melchizedec Sikuli Paluku: “In the past year alone, around 1,000 people were killed. This has been going on for ten years. It has increased especially since 2014. Massacre follows massacre”.

Paluku laments the apathy of the Congolese government and the media.

The media in our country hardly speak about it. The people here have the impression that the state does not exist here. We feel abandoned by the state authorities.”

Instead of stopping the killings and neutralizing the attackers, the military operations spread attackers.

For years, the resource-rich border area between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda has been plagued by rebels from the ADF militia, who originally came from Uganda.

Iran want to destroy Israel

It is unusual for a parliament decide the total destruction of a sovereign nation – and set itself a certain deadline. The Iranian government must destroy Israel by 2041/42.

The Iranian Corps of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) presented one of its “strategic missile bases” on Friday, which are located on the “shores of the Persian Gulf”, according to the website of the Revolutionary Guards Sepahnews.

New marriages from the age of 18 in Saudi Arabia

As the Saudi Gazette reported, the Saudi Justice Ministry has set 18 years as the minimum age for marriage. The Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Sheikh Walid Al-Samaani, enacted the new policy in a circular on December 22, 20 that was sent to all courts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

So far, child marriages have been usual in Saudi Arabia: every seventh girl marries before the age of 18.

According to the regulations of orthodox Islamic law, girls are allowed to marry from the age of nine. These Islamic law is based on the marriage of the Prophet Muhammad with his third wife Aisha, who, according to Islamic tradition (Hadith), was six years old at the time of the marriage contract and nine years old at the wedding.

Normalization with Israel

Saudi companies want to invest in Israel with the help of intermediaries from Bahrain. The potential investors are primarily interested in the high-tech offer in Israel.

After rumors about a possible normalization of relations between Indonesia and Oman with Israel, the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that soon we will see many more Muslim states normalizing their relations with Israel.

In addition to Oman and Indonesia, the “Jerusalem Post” also names states such as Mauritania, Niger and Saudi Arabia, but also Pakistan as possible states that could establish relations with Israel.

The Israeli Jerusalem Post quoted Israeli officials as saying that Saudi Arabia would announce normalization with Israel within 12 months.

Saudi Arabia needs to diversify

The low oil prices and the corona pandemic are exacerbating the financial crisis in Saudi Arabia. Due to the slowdown in the global economy, the relevant oil price fell from around $ 60 to less than $ 20 per barrel and has not recovered completely since then. The annual average price is around $ 40. For a balanced national budget, however, Saudi Arabia needed an oil price almost twice as high.

In addition to oil exports, pilgrimage tourism to the holy sites of Islam in Mecca and Medina also brings a lot of money into the conservative kingdom every year. The income of more than $ 20 billion corresponds to almost 3% of the annual national income. But because of the Corona crisis, Riyadh closed the borders to foreign pilgrims for seven months. Since November, travel to Mecca has been possible again with restrictions. Continue reading Saudi Arabia needs to diversify

A turning point in Islam

Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, the spiritual leader of the Islamic Clergy Community, declared on Saturday December 19 in Pakistan:

Muslim scholars should read the Koran, in which Mohammed writes: Enter the Holy Land which Allah has destined for you ˹to enter˺ (Sure 5:21). Muslims need to read the Koran and understand the text what the Koran says. The Koran and history prove to us that Israel belongs to the Jews. King David built the house of God in Jerusalem for the Israelis and not for the Palestinians.  Continue reading A turning point in Islam

Saudi Arabia de-escalated

Saudi Arabia removes anti-Semitism and anti-Israel material from school textbooks. While the kingdom has not yet made peace with Israel, it is taking steps to revise the narrative for future generations.

“The Saudi authorities have started to eradicate anti-Jewish hatred, including an infamous hadith (Kitāb al-fitan No. 82), which fuels anti-Semitism in the Muslim world,” said Marcus Sheff, CEO of Impact-se.

Most references to jihad and martyrdom, such as “In the path of Allah, jihad is the height of Islam” have been removed. Israel is not fully legitimized, for example it still does not appear on the maps.

Christmas becomes a national holiday in Iraq

With one voice the Iraqi parliament decided Christmas will now also be a national holiday in Iraq.

It was Patriarch Sako who proposed to President Salih on October 17 that a bill should be introduced in parliament to recognize Christmas as a public holiday throughout Iraq.

On this occasion, Salih also reaffirmed his intention to encourage the return of the displaced Christians to their areas of origin in every way possible.

President Salih is a Kurdish engineer who graduated from the UK.

Dubai safer for Jews than Europe

While Jews in Dubai and the UAE can wear their kippah openly without fear, they dare to do it less and less in Europe.

Last week’s Hanukkah celebrations in Dubai and national efforts to support tolerance and coexistence in the United Arab Emirates have created a reality where Jews are more welcome and safer in the UAE than in Europe.

In most European countries you have to think twice about wearing a kippah because it is risky. You could be spat at, yelled at, arbitrarily attacked, or even murdered.

It also shows that it’s not that difficult to have tolerance. In most Asian countries you can wear a kippah and feel safe.

The Pope takes a step towards the Shiite world

In March, Francis wants to be the first Pope to visit Iraq. He knows Muslims must be won if religious minorities can have a future. He is of course aware of the afflictions and persecution that Christians under the Muslim world face, not at least in Iraq. At the same time, however, he wants to help strengthen that delicate plant of Islamic self-reflection that is currently sprouting.

The Islamic age of an increasing radicalization, which began in 1979 with the Islamic Revolution in Iran and the storming of Sunni fanatics on the Great Mosque of Mecca, has slowed down in the Middle East following the experience with IS. More and more Muslim leaders and ordinary believers want a new direction.

According to reports, a visit to Iraq would also include a meeting with senior Shiite representatives. If possible, a similar document to that of Abu Dhabi, which Francis published with Grand Imam Ahmad al-Tayyeb in spring 2019, could be signed. This document had positive effects for the Christian minorities in the Muslim world.
