Advent images in the Torah

The Advent season is just around the corner and with it the habit of consciously looking forward to Christmas in a new way every day.

This year’s series will be Advent images in the Torah.

Messiah images in the Torah

Christ the King

Matthew tells us by the birth of Jesus, that he is born as King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2).

In the Passion many mockingly refer to Jesus as King. They have no idea that here is the one who represents true kingship.

A kingship that is willingly at the service of others. Matthew 23:11: “The greatest among you shall be your servant.”

Eternal life

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).

Eternal life is not the reward for living a good life or being “right believing”.

Eternal life begins when we entrust our lives to Jesus (believe), thereby honouring the Father in heaven and allowing ourselves to be transformed by the Holy Spirit.

Eternal life is a continuation of our relationship with God.

Jesus is asked what the key to eternal life is. The answer is love of God and love of neighbour (Luke 10:25-28).

Conflict management by Jesus

It is exciting to see how Jesus resolves the conflict with the angry people in John 8:

Keep calm.

– Do not respond immediately with counter-arguments.

Take your time. Take notes.

– Ask a reflective question.

– Give everyone the opportunity to withdraw elegantly from the discussion.

– Give them the opportunity to make a fresh start.

The other focus

Jesus does not condemn the woman who has been caught in the act of adultery in John 8. Jesus does not even raise the question of the adulteress’ guilt.

With this actions Jesus defines how to deal with the biblical law. He does not trivialise the sin. Adultery is not a “trivial offence”.

Nor does he condemn the woman. Rather, he calls for repentance: “From now on sin no more”. God’s love invites to surrender and reorientation.

This is the key to handle the divine commandments. The commandments are a goal and an orientation for us because they have the good intention of saving us human beings from chaos.

Our focus is not on guilt, but on reconciliation with God and with our fellow human beings, and on reconciliation with life.

Reduced to a higher developed animal

In the book of Revelation, the power against God, such as Satan (the dragon), is described as a beast. These beasts do not represent a divine image, but embody godlessness. They want to depersonalise man and reduce him to a number.

God, however, is a person and calls his creatures by their personal names. Isaiah 43:1 says: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

It is exciting that in our time we have degraded man to a more developed animal. The divine dignity of man has been lost.

The first beast in Revelation 13 abuses state power. The second beast, the false prophet, embodies a religious or ideological power that allows itself to be at the service of the first beast, tempting people to live out of relationship with God.

The woman of Revelation 12

The woman in Revelation 12 represents more than just Mary, the mother of Jesus. The exciting thing about this picture is that the woman (the Jewish people) is standing on the moon and not on the earth. The moon represents timetable. It can be understood that the Jewish people are the hands of the world clock.

It is also interesting to note that the war is ultimately waged against those who keep the commandments of God and hold fast the testimony of Jesus (Revelation 12:17). Messianic Jews keep the commandments of God (Jewish traditions) and hold fast to the testimony of Jesus.

In this vision, the focus is not on the world but on the Jewish people (represented as women) who are in the devil’s crosshairs. The key point is that when Christ begins his reign over the world, the devil will be driven back and thrown to the earth (verse 10). The text does not say when this will be.

Jesus also says in Acts 1:7: It is not for you to know the times and seasons which the Father has fixed by his authority.”

Perhaps the denial of the date is the solution to the great mystery. Perhaps it is not a date at all, but a condition.

Maybe there is still the Nineveh factor. As long as people repent, God is still waiting with judgement.

Arrogance is the way down

The devil lost his exalted position through rebellion (Ezekiel 28:14-17). His judgement is announced in Genesis 3:15.

The cross is the turning point. It is not Jesus who is destroyed, but the devil who loses his rights as ruler of the earth. John 12:31 says: Now will the ruler of this world be cast out”.

The devil tries to come between God and man. Ephesians 2:2 says: The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.”

One day he will be thrown to the earth (Revelation 12:13). He will then be bound for 1000 years according to Revelation 20:2, and finally banished for all eternity according to Revelation 20:10.

A haughty spirit goes before a fall (Proverbs 16:18). Pride and arrogance lead to failure.

The devil wants to prevent God from fulfilling His promises

After failing to devour the Messiah in Revelation 12, the dragon now fights against all people who entrust their lives to Jesus.

The devil wants to prevent God from fulfilling His promises. However, there will always be people who are not controlled by the devil and who do not rebel against God and His order.

Revelation 12:11 describes how the devil is defeated by appealing to the blood of Jesus – His substitutionary death – by standing with God and no longer being forced by threats of death.

The dragon in Revelation 12

The dragon in Revelation 12 is clearly named in verse 9: “that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world“.

Verse 4 says: ” He swept down a third of the stars of heaven“. Verse 7 then explains: “The dragon and his angels”. The stars represent God’s angels. This means that there are twice as many angels as there are fallen angels or demons who rebelled with Satan against God’s orders (Revelation 12:4, 9).

The devil is weaker than we think and is already in a lost position.
